Quiet Saturday night in, anyone?

The weather has been pretty consistently miserable throughout the week and it’s too early to venture out to do your Christmas shopping…

Fortunately, there are some genuinely tremendous films on the box tonight, and we’ve got a whole list of them for you. We’ve also thrown in some films that are significantly less tremendous, just in case that’s what you’re into.

Shrek The Third — RTÉ — 18:35

If you’ve been paying attention to the news this week you’ll know that Shrek is in line for a reboot, but if you’re looking for something to distract the kids this evening while also getting a few laughs in yourself, you could do a lot worse than the third film in the original series.

Superman — RTÉ 2 — 15:00

That’s right, the original Superman from 1978 starring Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder and Marlon Brando. Marvel might rule the day when it comes to modern superhero flicks but this offering is a very interesting insight into how times have changed. Definitely worthy checking out.

Invictus — RTÉ 2 — 21:00

Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela. Matt Damon doing his very best at a South African accent. Rugby. This film doesn’t necessarily have it all, but it is a quasi-inspiring tale of how sports can bring a divided nation together.

I, Robot — Channel 4 — 22:15

If you’re the kind of person who worries about artificial intelligence that you should DEFINITELY watch this to put your fears to rest. In a world where robots had been trained to do whatever we tell them, they all start going haywire and Will Smith has to take them down.

The Inbetweeners Movie — E4 — 21:00

Just one of the funniest films of recent years. The hapless losers go on holiday to Greece and end up embarrassing themselves in myriad ways, including the most epic dancing scene in the history of cinema.

Good Will Hunting — W — 21:00

An absolute classic featuring a career-making performance by Matt Damon and a career-defining performance by the inimitable late Robin Williams. Damon and Affleck won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for this back in 1997 and the story, plus the performances that bring it to life, were well worth the award.

Eight Legged Freaks — Syfy — 18:00

Big giant spiders vs flamethrowers. Don’t be a chicken. Watch it. Starring David Arquette, Kari Wuhrer, Scarlett Johansson, Scott Terra and Doug E Doug.

Van Helsing — Syfy — 20:00

This was actually already on during the week but if you missed it, it’s a good opportunity to see Hugh Jackman kick ass. It’s not particularly good but it does what it says on the tin.

Black Hawk Down — Syfy — 22:50

This was also on during the week, but unlike Van Helsing, is actually a very good movie about an American helicopter that gets shot down behind enemy lines. Intense, military, exciting.
