Movies on TV

Funny how the long weekend always ends up feeling so short.

We’re all back in work tomorrow (I, the person writing this, am obviously in work today), so we could probably all do with a nice never-settling film before heading off to bed.

Of course, there is every chance that you’re going to be engrossed in Love Island, which starts tonight… but just in case you’re not, here’s a selection of the best movies on TV tonight for you to consider.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – ITV2 – 18.25

Okay so these films are absolutely not as good as Harry Potter but they are set in the same universe and are vaguely satisfying in terms of providing more Harry Potter world-building. Colin Farrell is the best thing about this film.

The Revenant – RTÉ2 – 9pm

That’s right, it’s the film that finally got Leonardo DiCaprio that ever-elusive Oscar. It’s a tough, outdoorsy, epic western directed by another Oscar-favourite Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Also stars Tom Hardy and Irishman Domhnall Gleeson.

Tropic Thunder – Sky One – 9pm

Another early step in the Robert Downeyssance of the late 2000s. A comedy that features a movie-within-a-movie, and a lot of absurd humour from comedic heavyweights like Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Danny McBride and Bill Hader. Also features one of the more memorable cameos of recent years, courtesy of an unrecognisable Tom Cruise.

Super 8 – TG4 – 9.30pm

A boy and his friends sneak out at night to film an amateur zombie movie, only to witness a train derailment. As people start disappearing from their town and the military descends in force, they come to realise a dangerous alien was being transported on the train and is now on the loose. So it’s a lot like Stranger Things, but not quite that good.

Starsky & Hutch – ITV4 – 11pm

Another Ben Stiller classic, this time alongside Owen Wilson. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in this reboot of this 70s buddy cop classic.

Dirty Dancing – Virgin Media Three – 00.30am

Nobody puts baby in the corner. A film that actually has a lot more serious moments than would might anticipate. Isn’t just about dancing, Stars the late Patrick Swayze in an iconic performance.
