Young Woman and the Sea, one of 2024's most beloved sports drama movies, has just been added to Disney+.
The film sees Daisy Ridley (Rey in Star Wars) play legendary swimmer Trudy Ederle, who was known as "the Queen of the Waves".
Young Woman and the Sea charts her journey from being born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905 to overcoming the "adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team".
This is before she attempts a staggering achievement - a 21-mile swim from France to England.
Featuring a great supporting cast including Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), Glenn Fleshler (True Detective), Jeanette Hain (The Reader), Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve), Sian Clifford (Fleabag) and Stephen Graham (Boiling Point), Young Woman and the Sea currently holds a critics score of 88% and an audience score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In particular, the movie has been praised for its inspiring real-life story, its important themes and its likeable lead turn from Ridley.
You can read a sample of some of those glowing reviews below:
MovieFreak.com: "Trudy Ederle’s story needed to be told, and that it also happens to be this gosh darn triumphantly entertaining is a giant win for all of us."
New York Times: "This is one of those movies that proves, when they’ve got a mind to, they can still make them like they used to."
San Jose Mercury News: "Based on Glenn Stout’s book, director Joachim Ronning’s absorbing drama does a masterful job of showing the obstacles thrown at the daughter of German immigrants while on her 21-mile trek from France to England."
Variety: "Joachim Rønning’s classically glorious Young Woman and The Sea is a defiantly big-screen biopic that both earns one’s genuine tears, and inspires everyone of all ages to dream a little bigger, go a little further."
TheWrap: "An old-fashioned Disney crowdpleaser par excellence."
Young Woman and the Sea is streaming on Disney+ now.
