Elaine Mai is delighted to be showcasing new music ahead of Body & Soul

She's all set for the weekend's activities.

JOE

Elaine Mai is no stranger to JOE.

Her track ‘Enniscrone’ was our Song of The Day #432 and was dedicated to her late cousin; the song celebrates all the good times they spent together as children.

EMai has finally returned with her new EP, The Colour of the Night, which was three years in the making. She has been expanding on her previous critically acclaimed live performances and has experimented with her live shows as well as taking a different approach to her songwriting and production.

Despite the long wait for her new EP, Mai has stayed in the music sphere and in the past two years has released several new remixes and even co-produced a track with Irish producer, Daithí.

She also threw her hat in the theatre ring and wrote and produced the music for Finem Respice, a play which enjoyed a sold-out run as part of the 2016 Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival.

Her new EP centres around the common human experiences of grief and hope and Mai is delighted to be sharing this new music which coincides with her performance at Body & Soul.

Speaking to Vents Magazine, the singer said: “Over the last few years, I have encountered close personal grief for the first time and this track is about that experience. The melody and movement in the strings are a musical representation of the journey from sorrow and despair to acceptance and hope.

“Although the person you loved is gone, there is joy in their memory, solace in the time that was shared together and ‘The Colour of the Night’ captures that for me,” she said.

The writing process was slightly different for Mai for this EP and she claims she was delighted to finally get in the booth and get the tracks down.

“I wrote this mainly on my laptop and when I was happy went to record the vocals. I enjoyed the whole experience so much and I always find it crazy when an idea, that just started as a tiny blip in your mind becomes something real – something that exists now in a permanent state that didn’t exist before,” she concluded.

You can catch Elaine Mai at Body & Soul which takes place between June 23-25.
