“We appreciate your understanding and support for James and, as always, thank you for being a part of our Metallica family.”

Metallica frontman James Hetfield has entered an addiction treatment program, resulting in the band placing their current world tour on hiatus.

The Worldwired Tour has been on the road in one form or another since it kicked off in Puerto Rico in October of 2016, travelling across the globe and grossing over $414 million in the process.

This summer, the band enjoyed a triumphant performance at Slane Castle, delivering a set list that left the majority of fans more than satisfied.

With the tour set to visit Australia and New Zealand from next month, Metallica have moved to call a halt to proceedings as Hetfield enters rehab.

The often outspoken Hetfield’s struggles with addiction issues are no secret, with 2004’s Some Kind of Monster documentary shining a candid light on his troubles.

In a statement issued by the band via their social media platforms on Friday night, Metallica began with an apology.

“We are truly sorry to inform our fans and friends that we must postpone our upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand,” they said.

“As most of you probably know, our brother James has been struggling with addiction on and off for many years. He has now, unfortunately, had to re-enter a treatment program to work on his recovery again.

“We fully intend to make our way to your part of the world as soon as health and schedule permit. We’ll let you know as soon as we can. Once again, we are devastated that we have inconvenienced so many of you, especially our most loyal fans who often travel great distances to experience our shows.

“We appreciate your understanding and support for James and, as always, thank you for being a part of our Metallica family.”

Ticket holders have been guaranteed a full refund.
