A gorgeous moment.
After thousands lined the streets of Dublin city to honour legendary Irish singer-songwriter Shane MacGowan, his funeral took place in Nenagh in Tipperary on Friday afternoon (8 December).
The Pogues frontman spent his early childhood in the town where his wife Victoria, others members of his family and several artist friends of MacGowan’s – including Aidan Gillen, Bob Geldof, Glen Hansard and Johnny Depp – gathered for the music legend’s funeral mass.
Also present at the ceremony in St Mary’s of the Rosary Church was Australian musician Nick Cave who performed a beautiful rendition of the Pogues’ 1986 single ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’, which was written by MacGowan.
The same song was also covered by Glen Hansard last Friday during The Late Late Show’s tribute to the Pogues singer.

Cave was one of a number of musicians to perform at the funeral, which was broadcast live via the official Shane MacGowan Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) social media profiles.
Another two were Hansard and Lisa O’Neill who performed a duet of ‘Fairytale of New York’, which on Friday was announced as reaching top of the singles chart in Ireland.
“There will be the opportunity to pay respects when the mass finishes as the funeral cortege then moves through Nenagh Town Centre from Church Road to Market Cross,” an earlier statement from MacGowan’s family read.
