Petition launched to outlaw ticket touts in Ireland following anger over exorbitant price of U2 tickets

Tickets to U2’s Croke Park gig sold out within minutes earlier this week.

A petition has been launched to outline ticket touting in Ireland following anger over the sale of U2 tickets for exorbitant prices earlier this week.

Not surprisingly, tickets for the Croke Park leg of U2’s Joshua Tree tour on July 22 sold out within minutes when they went on general sale on Monday morning.

Almost immediately after they sold out, tickets began to appear on secondary sites such as Done Deal and Seatwave (Ticketmaster’s official ticket exchange) for multiple times the face value of the tickets.

At the time of writing, there are 537 tickets available on Seatwave, with prices ranging from €200-€1,042.38. Per ticket.

Earlier this week, Fine Gael TD Noel Rock drew up a draft bill which would “render it unlawful for any unauthorised person to sell or offer for sale tickets for major sporting, musical or theatrical events for a price in excess of the officially designated price”.

Having received hundreds of emails, posts and texts about the issue from angry music fans this week, Radio NOVA has joined forces with Rock and launched a petition to outlaw ticket touts.

Rock is seeking a meeting with Taoiseach Enda Kenny this week to secure his backing for the bill, which he intends to put to the Dáil with the support of other TDs.

You can check out the petition and, if you wish, sign it, here.
