It was all getting a little explosive up in Mayo last week as a device suspected to be an unexploded World War II bomb washed up on one of its beaches.

The gardaí reacted in their normal uninterested fashion by telling the Mayo News it was not significant. Surely finding a World War II aircraft bomb would be of some note in the life of a rural Mayo guard.

The device was found on Silver Strand in Louisburgh last Thursday by a Dutch artist. Mels Dee just happened to be in Mayo visiting a gallery in Westport.

Mels was out taking a walk along the coast when he saw the cylindrical device. Now, we’re not sure if Mr Dee is aware of the emergency services, but instead of calling them he called the manager of the gallery he was visiting. Maybe he was looking for an artistic consultation on the scene he’d stumbled upon.

Westport gardaí said the Army Bomb Squad had come and taken the device away. Considering they described it as not significant we’re presuming it was a viable bomb.

Apparently, the Westport gardaí say this kind of thing happens all the time.
