12 counties hit with Status Yellow thunderstorm warning

Stephen Porzio

Dangerous road conditions are expected.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for 12 counties.

The alert was published at 8.30am on Saturday (15 October) and is currently in effect for the provinces of Connacht and Munster, as well as Donegal.

It is set to be valid until 9pm on Saturday night.

According to Met Éireann, there will be “further heavy showers and thunderstorms coupled with strong and gusty southwesterly winds and possible falls of hail”.

As such, “disruption is expected” including spot flooding and dangerous road conditions – especially near coasts.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann’s national forecast for Saturday says it will be “blustery and showery”, with frequent heavy and thundery showers and the chance of hail.

It states that these conditions will be mainly over the western half of the country but will extend eastwards throughout the day bringing spot flooding and disruption.

Fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds will also develop and will reach near gale force around exposed coasts.

Highest temperatures will be 10 to 13 degrees though it will feel colder in the wind.

While it will be windy and showers will persist for a time early on Saturday night, the winds will ease and conditions will turn drier overnight.

Sunday then will begin “calm, bright and mostly dry”.

However, cloud will build from the south throughout the day, bringing outbreaks of heavy rain during the afternoon and evening with localised flooding possible.

This rain will reach the northeast in the evening as southeast winds increase fresh to strong and gusty.

Again, these winds will reach near gale force at times near exposed coasts, as well as on high ground.

Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees are expected.

As for the days after, Met Éireann says: “A dry start to the coming week, with unsettled conditions returning from midweek onwards.”
