14-year-old girl dies after getting into difficulty swimming in Louth

Very sad news.

An Garda Síochána have confirmed that a 14-year-old girl who got into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Louth earlier today has died.

In a statement issued to JOE, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí who have been dealing with the incident at Seapoint, Termonfeckin, Louth this afternoon where a group of youths were swimming today, Friday 28 June, 2019 have confirmed the 14 year old girl has died.”

It had been reported earlier on that coastguard lifeboats from Skerries and Clogherhead, as well as a coastguard helicopter, had been deployed in an attempted search and rescue mission.

The girl was recovered from the water and flown to Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda, but she has since passed away.

Gardaí have also confirmed that their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
