However, driving tests will not be resuming any time in the immediate future.

The NCTS said that it will begin opening a number of its test centres on a phased basis from Monday 8 June.

The reopening is in accordance with the Government’s Roadmap for reopening Society and Business proceeding.

However, driving tests will not be resuming any time in the immediate future, according to Minister for Transport Shane Ross.

He said that this was due to challenges posed by maintaining social distancing in an enclosed space between the tester and the learner driver for periods in excess of 15 minutes.

Speaking to RTÉ, Ross said: “I can assure learner drivers that officials in my Department and the Road Safety Authority are looking at all available options to get car driving tests started again as soon as possible.”

It is expected the theory test centres will also begin reopening from next week on.

To enable the re-opening of centres the NCTS has put detailed measures in place, in each test centre, to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19 and to protect both customers and staff, with more information available on the NCTS website here.

For example, customers must make an appointment in advance and cash will not be taken.
