4,004 new Covid cases reported as HSE says hospitals will be “under real pressure” in December and January

“We can all help to make this better by taking up the booster vaccine when offered.”

4,004 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Ireland as the HSE has said the country’s hospitals will be “under real pressure” throughout December and January.

As of 8am on Saturday, 481 patients with the virus are hospitalised, of which 111 are in intensive care units.

The Department of Health said that daily case numbers may change due to future data validation.

It also urged people who experience any symptoms of Covid-19 this weekend to “stay at home, don’t go to work and don’t meet with other people”.

“Self-isolate immediately and arrange for a PCR test – not an antigen test,” it wrote.

The figures come after Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Tony Holohan said on Friday that Ireland is in a “very uncertain and unstable position” due to high Covid-19 incidence.

Meanwhile, earlier on Saturday, HSE chief Paul Reid took to Twitter to give an update on how the health service is managing with the virus.

“In December and January, we know our hospitals will be under real pressure with currently 481 Covid-19 patients and 113 in ICU,” he wrote.

“We can all help to make this better by taking up the booster vaccine when offered.

“This weekend many locations open for walk-ins for specified groups.”
