The vaccine rollout to the age cohort will continue this weekend.

Over 75,000 12-15 year-olds have been registered through the HSE’s online portal to receive Covid-19 vaccines in the first 48 hours since it opened.

The figure comes as the vaccine rollout to the age cohort will continue this weekend after commencing on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter on Saturday morning, HSE CEO Paul Reid wrote: “Yesterday I witnessed many parents and their children from 12 to 15 attending a vaccination centre in Carrick on Shannon.

“Children have sacrificed so much in this pandemic too and they have shown maturity beyond their years. Vaccinations are our way out of this awful period.

“Over 75,000 12-15 year-olds have been registered online for vaccination in the first 48 hours since opening.”

Most children aged 12 to 15 will be vaccinated at a vaccination centre near their home.

Consent is required by a parent or legal guardian in advance or on the day of vaccination before anyone in the age group receives the vaccine.

12-15 year-olds will receive either a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Parents seeking information can find out more on the HSE’s website here.

To register online for a vaccine, you will need a mobile phone number, an email address, your PPS number and your Eircode.

If you do not have these things, you are advised to call the Covid-19 helpline to register by phone instead.

Once a parent successfully registers their child, the HSE will send vaccine centre appointment details by text message.

On Friday evening, 1,978 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Ireland.

As of 8am on Friday, 221 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 43 are in ICU.

In a statement accompanying the figures, Deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Ronan Glynn said incidence of the virus is rising across all 26 counties.

“While we have very high incidence across Donegal, Monaghan, Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Louth and Cavan in particular, incidence is rising across all 26 counties,” the Deputy CMO stated.
