The Republic of Ireland’s highest single-day death toll by far.

Monday evening’s Department of Health briefing has confirmed that 77 more people have died after being diagnosed with Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland. The latest figures take the total death toll for the Republic of Ireland to 687.

Not all deaths have occurred in the last 24 hours, and the number includes positive tests for Covid-19 where the results have come back in after the patient’s death. The previous highest single-day total had been 43.

New cases of the virus continue to fall, however, and the National Public Health Emergency Team confirmed 401 new cases of the virus – which includes older tests where the results were processed in German labs.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Republic of Ireland now stands at 15,652.

The announcement followed the news that 13 more people had died of the virus in Northern Irish hospitals, taking the total number of deaths in the north to 207.
