A church in Dublin city centre will soon be serving beer

Rosanna Cooney

It will be continuing a long tradition of worship and drunken confession.

In a church on the city’s streets the changing times will continue to shine, as Wetherspoons comes to a church near you. The chain has been given planning permission to renovate and refurbish a former church on Abbey Street.

The company bought the site in 2015 for €1.4 million and has just announced renovations will go ahead. The new Dublin bar is expected to create up to 50 jobs.

Wetherspoons has other premises in Dun Laoghaire, Blackrock, Swords, and Blanchardstown as well as one in Cork.

Whether any remnants of the building’s former use will remain as tribute is unclear.

Pews aren’t the most conducive to craic but many is the opportunity for blasphemous decor, basins of uisce beatha and chalices of red, red wine.
