Thousands of people have signed it already.

A petition calling on the Irish government to welcome thousands of refugees has already been signed by thousands of people.

The petition, which you can see and sign on Uplift.ie, has been set up in response to what has been described as the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II, a crisis which was illustrated in harrowing fashion by the emergence of pictures of a young Syrian boy, Alyan Al-Kurdi, washed up on a beach in Turkey yesterday.

The message accompanying the petition, titled ‘Refugee Crisis: Stand in Solidarity’, describes the Irish government’s response to the crisis so far as “dismal” with the government having offered to relocate just 600 people over two years.

Response the petition has been swift, with 9,442 having signed it at the time of writing and Uplift are calling on Irish people to show that there is public support for increasing the numbers.
