Wrap up well because it’s going to be absolutely freezing this weekend

Conor Heneghan

Irish weather forecast

If it’s not one extreme, it’s the other in Ireland this week.

Temperatures will plummet to as low as -5 degrees this weekend as Ireland braces itself for a cold snap in the wake of Storm Eleanor, which wreaked havoc here and on the continent this week.

According to the latest forecast from Met Éireann, temperatures will drop to below freezing in many parts of the country every night from Friday to Sunday, with Saturday and Sunday night expected to be particularly cold.

The good news is there will be plenty of sunshine to go with the drop in temperatures, with sunny spells expected throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday particularly, along with showers in the south and southeast on Saturday.

After battering most of the country for most of the week, the wind will subside slightly in the coming days, but will still be strong and make it feel even colder for anyone out and about, with temperatures forecast to reach no higher than 5-7 degrees in the afternoon between Friday and Sunday.

At night, meanwhile, temperatures will drop to as low as -2 on Friday night and to -5 in places on Saturday and Sunday night, with ice, frost and freezing fog expected as a result.

The outlook for early next week doesn’t anticipate conditions getting much warmer so best get the extra blankets, warm clothes and hot water bottles ready, you’re going to need them in the coming days.
