‘You will be missed and fondly remembered by us all.’

Several members of the cast of Hardy Bucks have paid tribute to their co-star Alan ‘Ali’ Carter following his death earlier this week.

The Mayo man, who featured in the beloved Irish comedy show as Scorpio Lyons, was found deceased at a house in Westport.

In a statement to JOE on Tuesday afternoon, a Gardaí spokesperson said: “Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of a body of man in a house in Westport, Co. Mayo yesterday, Monday, 26th August 2024 at approximately 6am.

“The body was removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where a post-mortem will take place, which will determine the course of the investigation.”

It is understood that foul play is not suspected.

In an Instagram post, 3 Bucks Left – a comedy group comprising of Hardy Bucks cast members Stephen ‘Cowboy’ Kelly and Peter Cassidy paid tribute to Ali.

“With great sadness I write this post. By now a lot of ye will know of the sudden and unexpected passing of Hardy Bucks Actor Alan Carter, known to his family and friends as Ali, known to Hardy Bucks fans around the world as Scorpio,” the tribute reads.

“The Hardy Bucks was more than an internet and TV show. It was a time portal to a time and generation in Ireland when comedy and humour was needed most, and Alan was part of that cultural phenomenon delivering a smile a laugh and even if only for a moment, a light in the darkness to the generation of the time and anyone who had the pleasure of watching and meeting him since.

“Of course, Alan was much more than just a Hardy Bucks character, he was a loving and much loved father, partner, son, brother and friend to many and no man is a failure who has friends.

“Fairness doesn’t govern life and death if it did no good person would die and Alan would still be with us. In the words of W.B. Yeats: “Think where man’s glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends.

“You will be missed and fondly remembered by us all, may you Rest In Peace Alan.”

Kelly played Cowboy Lavin and Cassidy played ‘Frenchtoast’ O’Toole in Hardy Bucks.

Owen Colgan, who was Billy ‘Buzz’ McDonnell on the beloved Irish comedy series, also paid tribute to Ali.

He wrote on Facebook: “Ali was a legend of a man. He’ll be sadly missed but never forgotten!”

Mr Carter’s death notice reads: “Ali will be deeply missed and loved by his partner Lorraine, daughter Aleisha, parents Geraldine and John, brothers Kevin and Gordon, sisters-in-law Aoife and Liona, and Caroline Carney, nephews Cormac and Jonah, aunts, uncles, cousins, work colleagues and many friends.”

His funeral mass will take place in Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Swinford on Friday, 30 August, at 12 noon prior to burial in Kilconduff Cemetery.

Ali’s former football club Swinford FC also paid tribute, posting on social media: “Ali will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

“Ali and the Carter family are a massive part of our club and we offer our deepest condolences to his partner Lorraine, daughter Aleisha, parents Geraldine and John, brothers Kevin and Gordon and all his extended family as well as all his former teammates and many many friends.”

Others sent on their condolences online, with one saying: “Condolences to family and friends. Alan, thanks for all the laughs on Hardy Bucks over the years. Rest easy sir.”

Another said: “It was a pleasure to have met and have worked with Ali. Ali was an absolutely gentleman that would brighten up anyone’s day.

“My sincere condolences to Alis family and friends at this heart breaking time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam dílis.”

A friend added: “Alan I can’t believe that you are gone I would give anything to have one more pint with you. Deepest condolences to all your family and friends until we meet again.”
