Alan Shatter lost his seat and there wasn’t much sympathy doing the rounds

Paul Moore

The first high profile casualty.

Former Justice Minister Alan Shatter has sensationally lost his seat in Dublin Rathdown as the General Election has claimed its first high profile casualty. Lucinda Creighton is currently facing a nervous wait also but Shatter’s defeat has been the most interesting one to date.

Green Party Catherine Martin and Fine Gael’s Josepha Madigan – Shatter’s running mate – also won a seat in the Rathdown  constituency. Shatter was first elected to the Dáil in 1981, lost his seat in ’02 but returned to politics after being appointed as the Minister for Justice and Equality and later as the Minister for Defence in 2011.

Controversy has never been far away though especially following the Guerin report, two bugging scandals, his very public profile and Shattergate.

Here’s how an eventful evening for Alan Shatter unfolded.

The news itself.

The interview where he didn’t agree with Fine Gael’s vote management approach.

There’s always some messers.

He didn’t get much sympathy.

Some people were on his side though.

He did get a few suggestions for a potential future profession.
