Amazing news for Irish students as J1 visa agreement extended

Carl Kinsella

Great news for Irish students has emerged from Washington DC this evening as the J1 visa agreement that allows Irish graduates to travel and work in the United States for twelve months has been extended.

Some had worried that Donald Trump’s hardline stance on immigration would spell the end of the transfer programme which gives thousands of Irish the opportunity to visit American for longer than the standard 90 day allowance.

The news was broken this evening by RTÉ’s Washington Correspondent Caitriona Perry, who tweeted: “Ireland and the US have just signed an agreement extending the 12 month J1 visa for another 3 years.”

In order to be eligible for the 12 month graduate visa a student must have a degree for an Irish third-level institution and begin their visa within a year of their graduation date.
