RTÉ spent a ridiculous amount of money on taxis alone last year

That's a lot of money.

That’s a lot of money.

While RTÉ has begun to make cut backs, their latest bill for taxis in 2016 will definitely raise a few eyebrows.

The Sun obtained the figure through the Freedom of Information and found out that RTÉ spent in excess of €500,000 on taxis in 2016.

€91,000 of that was spent on employee travel, while the rest went on guests for the various shows on TV and radio. These would include the likes of The Late Late Show guests and those who were speaking on the Ray D’Arcy radio show.

RTÉ released the following statement on the matter:

“Our policy on travel expenses, including the use of taxis, requires that taxis are only used when necessary for business and programme-related reasons.”

They also added:

“Taxi costs reflect the comprehensive nature of RTE’s operations including those outside of public transport hours, and the necessity to provide transport for guests, programme contributors as well as staff.

Taxis are only used when necessary and only in accordance with the RTE pre-approval of same.”
