The most sung song of all-time remains legal.
Don’y worry, you can still serenade your loved ones every year with that catchy birthday tune.
According to The Journal, Warner Music requested $1,500 for its use in a movie, after they bought out the company that had previously claimed they owned the song.
The defending filmmakers argued that ‘Happy Birthday’ belongs to the public and the judge in LA agreed, saying Warner Music does “not own a valid copyright in the ‘Happy Birthday’ lyrics.”
So there you have it, Warner Music nearly saved the world from awkwardly sitting there as the room unenthusiastically congratulate you on another year of life.
