Angela Merkel emphatically shut down Britain’s Brexit plans

No way, Theresa May (sorry)…

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has told her party convention in Germany that Britain will not be allowed to “cherry pick” during their Brexit negotiations.

The announcement was met with cheers from her Christian Democratic Union party colleagues and supporters.

We will not allow any cherry picking,” Ms Merkel told more than 1,000 delegates in the western city of Essen.

“The four basic freedoms must be safeguarded – freedom of movement for people, goods, services and financial market products. Only then can there be access to the single market.”

Freedom of movement and the single market remain as the stumbling blocks for Britain as they seesaw between a ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ Brexit stance.

Confusion over what the outcome will be was further exacerbated when Britain’s Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, David Davis, touted the possibility last week that the British Government were potentially willing to pay for access to the single market.

But this won’t be the case according to Chancellor Merkel.

Earlier today Theresa May told BBC News that: “People talk about the sort of Brexit that there is going to be – is it hard or soft, is it grey or white?”

“Actually we want a red, white and blue Brexit. That is the right Brexit for the UK, the right deal for the UK.”

There’s further unrest among Theresa May’s party with the International Business Times reporting that up to 40 Tory MPs are planning to back a Labour motion on Wednesday which calls for “clarity” from the government over its exit strategy from the EU.
