Arthur Ryan, founder of Penneys, has died at the age of 83

The company recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Arthur Ryan, the founder, chairman, and former chief executive of Primark, has died today, after a short illness, it was announced by the company today (Monday 8 July).

Ryan was born in July 1935, and he opened his first Penneys store on Mary Street in Dublin in July 1969.

He took the chain to the UK in 1974, changing the name to Primark in order to avoid any confusion with US store chain JC Penneys.
