Arthur Ryan, the founder of Penneys, died during the week at the age of 83.

The funeral procession of Penneys founder Arthur Ryan has passed by the clothing chain’s first store, where a guard of honour was formed.

The hearse moved on to Jervis Street in Dublin before passing the Penneys store on Mary Street.

According to RTÉ, applause broke out from staff members, past and present, as the procession moved up Jervis Street.

The funeral procession turned onto Parnell Street before travelling to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Donnybrook for the funeral mass.

Ryan was born in July 1935, and he opened his first Penneys store on Mary Street in Dublin in July 1969.

He took the chain to the UK in 1974, changing the name to Primark in order to avoid any confusion with popular US store chain JC Penneys.
