Look at that Nelson Mandela statue there. It captures him just as we remember the great man, with a tiny rabbit in his ear…

A couple of artists in South Africa are in hot water after it was discovered that they managed to slip a tiny rabbit inside the ear of a giant Nelson Mandela statue that was unveiled in Pretoria just one day after his death.

The two artists, Andre Prinsloo and Ruhan Janse van Vuuren, added the rabbit after they were told that they wouldn’t be allowed to sign the statue with their names to show that it was their work, what with it being a tribute to the president, but that didn’t stop them from sneaking something in to let people know that they had crafted the 30-foot tall bronze statue. As you might expect, that something was a tiny rabbit inside Mandela’s ear. Lettuce show you what that looks like:

Apparently the government were alerted to it when a local newspaper brought it to their attention, and the artists have since had to apologise to both company who hired them and the government, both of whom were clearly hopping mad about the whole thing. Mogomotsi Mogodiri, a spokesman for the ministry of arts and culture, has said the government has accepted their apology, but deemed it a ‘senseless prank’ according to Yahoo News.

The artists have been now tasked with removing the rabbit from his ear, but they’re not sure how long it will take before the statue is restored to it’s non-rabbited state.
