Five people charged following violent assault incident in Offaly

Video footage of the attack went viral on social media.

Five individuals have been charged in relation to an incident of assault that took place in Offaly last week.

The incident took place in the Arden View residential estate in Tullamore on Wednesday, 6 July.

Captured footage of the assault quickly went viral on social media. The video in question shows a man – aged in his 40s – being lured out of a house before running down a stretch of road while carrying a pitchfork.

The man is then chased by three men who are carrying baseball bats and a hockey stick. The footage then shows the men knock him to the ground before the assault commences.

During the fracas, a fourth man joins in with the attack. Later, three women are seen using the pitchfork to assault the man as he lies motionless on the ground.

On Tuesday (12 July), Gardaí charged five people – three men (aged in their 20s, 20s and late teens, respectively) and two women (aged in their 20s and 40s) in connection with the incident.

All five are scheduled to appear before Portlaoise District Court on Tuesday at 3pm.

Investigations are ongoing.
