Eight fire engines, two aerial appliances, an emergency tender, a foam tender, several command units and a large number of senior officers attended the scene in north Dublin last night.

The Metro Hotel have released a statement confirming that they will be closed for some time following Wednesday night’s fire.

Emergency services were called to a Ballymun hotel last night when a fire broke out several stories high sometime around 8pm.

The fire is believed to have originated on the 13th storey of the Metro Hotel, a floor made up of private residences. Witnesses relayed that the top five levels were ablaze at one point. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

It’s understood that no injuries have been reported.

Families who fled the hotel were reportedly evacuated to the nearby Clayton Hotel. The Metro Hotel released a statement on Thursday afternoon confirming its closure because of the fire.

The brief statement reads: “Metro Hotel wishes to apologise to hotel patrons and guests that the hotel is currently closed, and will remain closed for some time, following a fire.”

Dublin Fire Brigade took to Twitter on Thursday afternoon thanking members of the community for their words of support and appealing to potential witnesses to get in contact with them should they have any information.

Dublin’s Chief Fire Officer Patrick Fleming announced on Friday morning that there is nothing to indicate that the cause of the fire is suspicious and that it will be “several months” before the building can be returned to use.
