Revenue officers seized 25,800 litres of beer on a truck in a routine operation in Rosslare last Wednesday, 10 January.

The truck was stopped when it arrived in Rosslare port from France, after routine profiling to identify alcohol products that may be diverted onto the market without payment of the tax due.

The beer had an estimated retail value of €107,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €55,000; investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.

Revenue officers at Dublin Airport and Dublin Port meanwhile, seized 1,980 vials of medicine, 800 pills, 25kg of tobacco and 24,000 cigarettes in routine operations in the last week.

Approximately 24,000 Benson and Hedges cigarettes and 25kg of shisha tobacco, concealed in the luggage of two men in their 20s who had arrived into Dublin on a flight from Kuwait via Doha and with a combined retail value of approximately €27,000 was seized in Dublin Airport on Saturday, 13 January.

On Wednesday, 10 January, meanwhile, Revenue officers at Dublin Port seized medicines, suspected to be steroids with an estimated retail value of €54,000, when they stopped and searched a truck arriving in Dublin Port from Holyhead.

The seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products, alcohol and medicines in the shadow economy.
