The body has been brought to Dungarvan pier.

A body has been found in the search for a missing kayaker off the coast of Waterford.

The search continued this morning (Tuesday, 13 August) for a kayaker who went missing the previous morning around Helvick Head in Dungarvan, according to the Department of Transport.

A Garda spokesperson revealed that the missing person is a male in his 60s.

The body has been brought to Dungarvan pier and the search has now been stood down.

According to multiple reports, the Irish Coast Guard was alerted to the incident shortly before 5.30pm on Monday.

That was before a search operation was launched, which temporarily ceased late Monday night.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport told JOE that Coast Guard Units from Bunmahon and Admore resumed searching from 5.30am.

Surrounding units from Tramore, Youghal and Dunmore East also joined the search.

A rescue helicopter R117 joined the search but “wind and low-lying mist” in the area made search conditions “challenging”.

In another statement to JOE, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) confirmed that Helvick Head RNLI were involved in the operation and were out since 5am.

Gardaí have also said the Irish Navy contributed to the search.
