A man was found unconscious on New Year’s Eve before later being pronounced dead in hospital.

Gardaí are investigating “all circumstances” surrounding the death of a man who was found unconscious in a housing estate in Cork on New Year’s Eve.

The man was discovered in the Mahon area of Cork city, with Gardaí and emergency services alerted shortly after 8.30am on Saturday morning.

The man, who was aged in his 40s, was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel before being taken to University Hospital Cork where he was later pronounced as deceased.

As of Saturday afternoon, the scene has been preserved so that a full technical examination may be carried out by the Divisional Scenes Crime Unit.

The local coroner and office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination has been arranged. Results from this examination will assist Gardaí in determining the subsequent course of the investigation.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak with people who may have video footage of the Ballinsheen Court area in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to make contact with Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 452 2000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
