Tony Cuddihy

Sad news following the discovery of the wreckage of Rescue 116 earlier this week.

It was reported earlier that a body had been discovered in relation to the incident off the coast of Mayo.

It has now been confirmed that the body of captain Mark Duffy has been found in the wreckage of the helicopter, with the naval service continuing their search for the final two members of the crew, Paul Ormsby and Ciaran Smith.

The body was brought to shore as the wreckage of the helicopter remains 40 meters underwater off Blackrock Island.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport confirmed to JOE that the black box recorder from Rescue 116 had been recovered.

Underwater conditions off the north coast of Mayo has been patchy the last few days as the crew continue their work around the stricken helicopter.

Rescue 116 crashed close to the island in the early hours of 14 March; its captain, Dara Fitzpatrick, was found on the morning of the accident but later lost her life.

JOE.ie would like to pass on its sympathies to the family and friends of captain Mark Duffy at this difficult time.
