Brendan Wall, 44, had been engaged to be married.

Condolences are being left to Brendan Wall, the 44-year-old from Meath who died while competing in an Ironman event in Cork at the weekend.

Brendan was one of two men that passed away, in separate incidents, while taking part in the 1.7km swim on Sunday, which was shortened from its original 3.8km due to weather conditions from Storm Betty.

The other man was Ivan Chittenden, a 64-year-old from Toronto in Canada who was competing in the event with friends.

Brendan was originally from Cardrath in Slane but had moved to Solihull in England. He was engaged to be married.

His death notice on RIP.ie reads:

“Tragically while competing in Ironman 70.3 Cork. Deeply regretted by his loving fiancée Tina,

“Parents Oliver and Gertrude (nee Lynch), brothers Martin and Joe, sister Maria (O’Connor), sisters-in-law, Denise and Sinead, brother-in-law, Paddy, nieces Casey, Aine and Lauren, nephews Daryl, David and Noah, aunts, uncles, relatives and a large circle of friends.”

Numerous tributes have since been left in the condolences section of Brendan’s RIP.ie page.

One person said: “My sincere sympathy to Tina and the Wall family. Brendan was a true gentleman. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very tough time. May he rest in peace.”

Another wrote: “My deepest condolences to a wonderful man. He made Tina so happy and was her soulmate. He was a gentle giant with a big heart. He will be greatly missed. RIP.”

A former colleague of Brendan’s added: “He was a beautiful soul. A natural leader, it was a great pleasure to work with him.

“He was hugely talented and knew how to have a good time. He energised people around him, even when things were tough at work.”

Brendan will lie in repose at Watters Funeral Home in Collon on Wednesday (23 August) from 4pm to 8pm.

His funeral mass will take place the following day at 1 pm in the Church of St Brigid in Grangegeeth.

Brendan will be buried afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. His funeral will be live-streamed at this link.

Despite the two mens’ deaths, the Cork Ironman event continued on Sunday with a 90km cycle and a long-distance run as thousands of spectators watched on.

In a statement on social media, Ironman Ireland said they were “deeply saddened” by the incidents.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Michael McGrath has stated that it is important a comprehensive and full investigation be completed to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
