The 80-year-old’s trial had been adjourned due to his ill health.

British Army veteran Dennis Hutchings, whose trial at Belfast Crown Court over a Troubles shooting was adjourned due to his ill health, has died.

It is understood that Dennis Hutchings died on Monday.

His trial had been adjourned for three weeks after he contracted Covid.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Veterans Movement said: “It is with deep regret and with the permission of his son John Hutchings that we sadly report that our brave friend Regimental Corporal Major Dennis Hutchings passed away in the Mater hospital this evening.

“No further details are known at this time.”

Hutchings was charged with the attempted murder of John Pat Cunningham in County Tyrone in 1974.

Cunningham, a 27-year-old with learning disabilities, was shot dead as he ran away from an army patrol across a field near Benburb.
