Dig out your runners, commuters…

An all-out Bus Éireann strike is due to begin at midnight tonight, as 2,600 staff protest a raft of 50 cost saving measures and work practice changes about to be introduced by the state-owned company.

Speaking to The Irish Times, the trade union SIPTU’s transport sector organiser Willie Noone said the “time for talking was over”.

Bus Éireann is battling to stem losses of almost €10m last year and insiders claim the company has no choice but to fire ahead with the cost saving plan.

In a statement last week, the company said that staff were unwilling to accept any “reduction in earnings, including unnecessary overtime earnings.

“Bus Eireann are extremely disappointed that talks with unions have broken down at the WRC today, following seven days of engagement,” the statement read.
