78-year-old man killed after car collides with articulated lorry in Monaghan

The incident occurred between Carrickmacross and Castleblaney on Wednesday afternoon.

A 78-year old man has died as a result of a collision between a car and an articulated lorry near Carrickmacross in Monaghan on Wednesday afternoon.

The collision occurred on the N2 road between Carrickmacross and Castleblaney, near McCaughey’s filling station, shortly before 5pm on Wednesday.

Gardaí confirmed on Wednesday night that the body of the driver of the car, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for a post-mortem examination.

The driver of the lorry was taken by ambulance to hospital; his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The local Coroner was notified and Garda forensic collision investigators arrived at the scene on Wednesday night.

The stretch of the N2 at the crash site at Taplagh near Carrickmacross was closed overnight on Wednesday and traffic diversions are expected to remain in place until noon on Thursday to facilitate the removal of a fully laden overturned articulated lorry.

Those using the route on Thursday morning are advised to plan their journey.
