The actor passed away in August of last year.
An inquest into the death of actor Alan ‘Ali’ Carter has revealed the cause of his death.
Carter was best known for his role as Scorpio in Hardy Bucks.
The 37-year-old was found dead in a house in Westport in August of 2024.
A coroner’s report on Thursday has now revealed the cause of the actor’s death, according to The Irish Mirror.
A verdict of misadventure was returned as the coroner warned that: “The dangers of combining alcohol and drugs cannot be overestimated.”
Coroner for Mayo, Dr. Eleanor Fitzgerald carried out the inquest.
Carter attended a stag on August 26 of last year and returned to an Airbnb with some friends where they all consumed cocaine.
During the hearing, evidence was provided that showed he had taken the hallucinogenic drug DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) and endured a seizure, which he did not recover from.
A statement given to Gardaí from Carter’s friend was read at Thursday’s inquiry.
It said: “Ali put powder in a pipe. He could not sit still. He was rolling around on the ground. We administered CPR and called an ambulance.”
A post-mortem examination was carried out by consultant pathologist Dr. Tamas Nemeth, who determined his cause of death as acute heart failure due to a heart attack caused by cocaine.
Dr. Nemeth explained that the actor had a heart condition, with up to 80% stenosis, which is the narrowing of a passageway in your body that prevents a certain substance or structure (like blood or nerves) from passing through as easily as it should.
The cause of death was the level of cocaine combined with stenosis, according to the doctor.
Dr. Fitzgerald spoke of how normalised it has become for people to take cocaine while drinking, and warned of “the risk of sudden death in certain people”.
She said: “That risk is not recognised and not understood. The dangers of taking alcohol and drugs cannot be overestimated.
“It is such a pity, such a tragedy, that a young person, out celebrating, that his young life ended in such a manner.
“However, this is the reality of what we are dealing with. We don’t want to be losing our loved ones to avoidable death.”
