Following his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease in 2021, the veteran broadcaster made headlines for climbing Croagh Patrick last month in order to fundraise for Pieta and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

"Everyone who supported Climb with Charlie, by your efforts, love and the kindness you have ALL made this amazing three million figure possible," Charlie said on Twitter.

"Yes, we have reached three million raised for two great charities. And not finished yet. Thanks for extending the hand of friendship."

In a later follow-up post, Charlie added: "I want to be honest I cried my eyes out when I saw the figure that we have raised three million euros.

"With my MND I cry a lot but today I am completely blown away by the kindness that everyone who supported Climb with Charlie has shown.

"You are my heroes. A big thank you."

Earlier this month, Charlie said he was facing his "biggest challenge yet" in a heartbreaking health update.

He stated that, while he was lucky to be able to climb Croagh Patrick, sitting down to eat is "turning into a nightmare" and that he has increased difficulty swallowing.

"I am lucky I was able to climb Croagh Patrick. But with my voice gone I am now facing my biggest challenge yet," he said.

"My swallow is getting worse. Sitting down now to eat is turning into a nightmare!

"But I can still extend the hand of friendship to everyone. Thanks for your support."

As of Saturday afternoon (14 May), the Climb with Charlie campaign has raised €3,050,525.06 for Pieta and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

A number of Irish stars joined Charlie for the Croagh Patrick climb, including singer Daniel O'Donnell and The Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy.
