Chinese plane with 132 people onboard crashes into mountain

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

A plane carrying 132 people has crashed into a mountainous area of the southern province of Guangxi.

According to the Guardian, the Chinese airliner crashed near the city of Wuzhou, sparking a mountainside fire as a result.

Rescuers have been dispatched to the region.

At the time of writing on Monday morning (21 March), the extent of the damage is unclear, nor are there immediate details on the amount or specific status of the related casualties.

It is also currently unknown precisely what caused the crash.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAA) has confirmed that 123 passengers and nine crew members were on board the aircraft; a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 jet.

Flight tracking websites have reported that the plane was in the air for approximately one hour prior to the crash occurring.
