No injuries or damage to fire equipment occurred.

Cork Fire Brigade were forced to call for Gardaí backup on Friday night, as they were attacked by a group of youths while dealing with a fire in the city.

According to Gardaí, they attended two fire incidents at about 10.15pm in the Kilmore road and Knocknaheeny area.

The group began throwing stones at the firefighters who were tackling a blaze in the north of Cork City at the time. Despite outside influences, the fighters were able to successfully extinguish the blaze and ensure to damage was caused no either them or their appliances.

Afterwards, a Cork City Fire Brigade spokesperson took to Twitter to share news of the incident.

“Tonight whilst one of our crews were dealing with a fire in the Northside of the City, they came under attack from youths throwing stones,” the tweet read.

“Garda assistance was requested and fire was extinguished, luckily no injuries to crew members or damage to appliances occurred.”

Gardaí said no arrests and no complaints of assault had been made.

The attack has caused people to call for Gardaí to wear body cameras to ensure the capture of troublemakers. A Garda official confirmed in a recent tweet that they are awaiting legislation to permit Gardaí to wear cameras of this nature.

This instance came on a busy night for Cork Fire Brigade, as crews attended incidents around the city including rubbish fires, a house fire, a car fire and bushes on fire.

Earlier in the week, the rescue service also successfully rescued one female from the River Lee.
