Cork man dies in hospital following serious assault

Very sad news from Cork.

Gardaí have confirmed that a 40-year-old man has died in Cork University Hospital on Friday morning following a criminal assault.

The man had been in serious condition in hospital for almost six weeks. A statement from An Garda Síochána confirmed that the man succumbed to his injuries this morning. The statement also confirmed that the Office of the State Pathologists had been notified, and that a post-mortem examination is due to take place at a later date.

Gardaí have said that the course of their investigation is dependent on the results of the post mortem.

The assault occurred at Patrick Street, Cork close to the junction with Academy Street, shortly after 9pm on Thursday, 12 September 2019.

Gardaí arrested a man on 11 October in connection with the assault but he was later released without charge.

They have renewed their appeal for anyone who may have witnessed this incident or anything suspicious, no matter how insignificant they think it is, to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021-452 2000 , The Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
