The latest figures have been released.

84 new Covid-19 cases have been confirmed, while three deaths have also been reported.

There has now been a total of 1,781 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland.

The three deaths reported on Wednesday occurred “in recent days”, it was confirmed at tonight’s briefing.

51 of Wednesday’s cases are found in Dublin, with six in Offaly, five in Kildare, and the remaining 22 cases spread across Cork, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Meath, Roscommon, Tipperary, Westmeath and Wicklow.

66% of today’s cases are found in people under the age of 45.

The Republic of Ireland now has 47 people in hospital with confirmed Covid-19, while six people are in ICU.

Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, said: “We continue to see a concerning pattern of cases, particularly in Dublin. Transmission is diffuse across the county, is in all age groups and is mainly being driven by social interaction within and between households.”

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly confirmed on Wednesday evening that Ireland’s five day case average is now 175.

He said: “We are on an upward trajectory and it is a cause for concern.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Leo Varadkar said that if Ireland is serious about living with Covid-19, then air travel must be increased to and from the country.

“I think we do have to acknowledge that international travel does come with risks, the virus was brought into the country as a consequence of international travel,” Varadkar said.
