The results of Google’s annual Year in Search rundown have been released, showcasing what Irish people spent the most time searching for on the tech giant’s platform in 2021.
In terms of overall searches, sports dominated with “European Championship” and “Premier League” taking the number one and two spots, respectively, followed, unsurprisingly, by “Coronavirus”.
The most searched for person in Ireland on Google, meanwhile, was Danish footballer Christian Eriksen, who collapsed during a game at the aforementioned Euros.
His name was also the fifth most searched for topic overall.
The second most searched for person was racehorse trainer Gordon Elliott, who sparked controversy in 2021 when an image emerged of him sitting on a dead horse.
In terms of entertainment, the most searched for movie was Netflix’s blockbuster Red Notice, featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds.
The streamer was also responsible for the two most searched for TV shows, which were Bridgerton and Squid Game.
“How to register for the Covid-19 vaccine,” was the most frequently asked question in the “How to” category of questioning, with “What is Article 16” being the most searched for in the “What is” bracket.
