Danny Healy-Rae: Noah’s Ark is more believable than climate change

Tony Cuddihy

His mind is not for changing.

The world according to Danny Healy-Rae must be a very strange place, but at least it isn’t dull.

The Dáil member from County Kerry was invited on to The Last Word to speak with Matt Cooper on Thursday evening.

He had earlier given an interview to Hot Press in which had claimed that God is in charge of the weather, claiming the fable of Noah’s Ark as fact.

“I’m basing my views on facts. The facts are there and history proves it. We had the Ice Age. We had Noah’s Ark. We had all those stories. We’ve proof of the Famine in 1740, which was caused by two years of incessant rain,” Mr Healy-Rae said.

“There were some centuries when the country was very hot… and then there were different centuries with so much rain and cold. So, those are facts,” he added.

When he was challenged on his beliefs by Cooper on The Last Word, Healy-Rae was in no mood to backtrack. At first he claimed not to be aware of the storm his comments had started, before Cooper asked him if he actually believed the events of Noah’s Ark to be true?

“I’d believe it as much as I’d believe stories you’re hearing now about climate change. I’m not basing my opinion solely on Noah’s Ark. My recollection is it was in the Bible, I’m not 100% sure on that.”

Cooper also asked Healy-Rae to clarify comments he had made around shooting intruders in the home.

“If I found these fellas in my house, I wouldn’t hesitate to disable him or immobilise him. A man’s home is his castle. The people are terrified of what’s happening.”

He refused, however, to tell Cooper whether or not he was in possession of a firearm.

“I’m not going to say that at this time. I can’t on the public airwaves. I don’t have a gun that isn’t licenced. I’ll answer it at a later time.”
