Denver have become the first city in the US to decriminalise psychedelic mushrooms.

Voters in Denver, Colorado approved the nation’s first referendum on decriminalising hallucinogenic mushrooms on Tuesday of this week.

It took until Wednesday for the vote to be counted, and it revealed that it narrowly passed with 50.6 percent of the vote.

According to the Washington Post, voters endorsed a change in Denver law that will require police to make arresting people for personal possession or use of psilocybin mushrooms “the lowest law enforcement priority in the City and County of Denver.”

Marijuana is already legal in the state, and those who campaigned for the legalisation of mushrooms are urging the rest of America to follow suit.

“We’re sending a clear signal to the rest of the country that America is ready to talk about psilocybin. We have work to do, we’re ready for it and we couldn’t be happier,” said Kevin Matthews, the leader of the Decriminalize Denver movement, which placed Initiative 301 on the ballot.

Psilocybin has been outlawed since the 1960s, when it was widely known as a recreational drug.

Certain studies in recent years have found that the substance can have positive effects on anxiety and depression for cancer patients.
