Updated certs will be automatically issued to booster vaccine recipients.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has announced that updated EU Digital Covid Certs (DCCs) will begin to be issued from this week for those who have received a booster vaccine.

The announcement comes following new rules adopted by the European Commission last month which state that DCCs will only be valid for nine months for intra-EU travel after people complete their primary vaccination course.

The measure will come into effect for travel across the EU from 1 February.

In a statement on Twitter, the Health Minister said that the new DCCs will begin to be issued from later this week and will be automatically issued to booster vaccine recipients.

“You can also request a DCC of Recovery if you’ve recovered in the last six months via the online portal,” Donnelly added.

In a statement to JOE, the Department of Health said that similar validity periods on vaccination certificates for domestic use, such as for access to indoor dining, are “not currently planned by the government”.

Meanwhile, earlier on Wednesday (5 January), 17,656 new cases of Covid-19 were reported.

As of 8am on Wednesday, 928 patients are hospitalised with the virus, of which 94 are in intensive care.

The Department of Health also said there has been a total of 5,952 deaths related to Covid notified in Ireland, including 40 deaths newly notified in the past week since last Wednesday.
