Donald Trump declares war on the words, ‘Happy Holidays’

Donald Trump has used Facebook to tell the American people that the phrase ‘Merry Christmas’ is back.

This is seen as a response to the widely used ‘Happy Holidays,’ a catch-all that also includes those who are not of the Christian faith but who also celebrate religious holidays at this time of the year.

Use of the phrase Happy Holidays is believed to have originated in the early 1970s, and it was soon adopted by public schools in the United States.

Facebook user Audrey Lynn Brill summed up the feelings of many people who responded to Trump’s post, writing, “No one stopped saying Merry Christmas!! If you want to say Merry Christmas, say it! You don’t dictate what anyone else says during the holiday season, or how someone responds to whatever you say. Jesus christ, try to find something important to talk about.”

Edward Frankonis writes: “Oh my God. It’s real. The War on Christmas is being dragged from the right-wing realm of make believe and being shoved down our throats. We’ve never stopped saying Merry Christmas. You can say whatever you want. Some of us would rather say “Happy Holidays” to acknowledge the existence of other Holidays at that time.”
