It’s the end of the world as we know it.
The American people have elected Donald Trump as their next President.
The official news came through around 7.35am, Irish time, as Hillary Clinton’s hopes of staging an unlikely comeback disappeared.
At Clinton campaign headquarters, everyone went home.
Polls were overturned as American voters decided to give two fingers to the establishment and enter the political unknown. Trump had taken early victories in Florida, North Carolina and Ohio and it fell on the Rust Belt states of the industrial midwest to seal victory for the former reality television star.
The big networks subsequently called it for Trump.
