Donegal man drowns

Very sad news.

Gardaí have confirmed that a 26-year-old man drowned in the early hours of Sunday morning after an incident at Poolawaddy Pier, Arranmore.

The specific details of the incident are unconfirmed, but Gardaí have said that a vehicle “entered the water” off the pier while the young man was inside it.

A second man, who had also been in the vehicle at the time of the incident, managed to safely get to land.

However, the 26-year-old was found dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post mortem will take place on Monday.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána has confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

The incident is reminiscent of a similar tragedy that occurred in Buncrana, Donegal in 2016.

A family of five drowned after their vehicle slid off the pier and became submerged in water. A four-month-old baby was rescued.

Sean McGrotty and his two sons Mark and Evan died as a result of the incident, as did Mr McGrotty’s mother-in-law Ruth, and Ruth’s daughter Jodi.
