An Garda Síochána’s Christmas Road Safety Campaign got underway on 29 November.
Just over 300 people have been arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving in Ireland since the commencement of An Garda Síochána’s Christmas Road Safety Campaign at the end of last month.
In total, Gardaí say that 301 drivers have been arrested; 264 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 37 for having been detected driving under the influence of drugs.
In light of the figures, Gardaí have pleaded with people driving over the Christmas period to be responsible and safe and not to put themselves or other roads users at risk. Gardaí urged motorists to operate within the applicable speed limits and to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
136 people have lost their lives on Irish roads to date this year, an increase of eight people in comparison to the same period in 2018.
